On her recurring role as a grandmother, and the film:
“I’ve sort of done this many times in my life. This is new because it’s film,” Squibb said. “We all loved doing it, it was a great experience. So no matter what happens, we have that and people are seeing it. So I’m thrilled.” (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)
His reaction
“I’m just beyond excited. It’s really an honor. It was a big role for me. It was challenging, but I took it day by day. Tom [Hanks] helped me and so did” director Paul Greengrass.
What do you think this nomination will mean to Somalia?
“A negative light has been shed on Somalia for a long time, and this [nomination] will be a positive light. Hopefully peace will come to Somalia one day .... As a Somali it was a good thing to do. I love acting but this was a true story.” (Robert Caplin / For The Times)
On the 20-year history of the project, and seeing the movie through for more than a decade herself:
“We’re a very small movie — $4 million over 25 days — and I feel like we get overshadowed by these huge movies. People forget what an amazing journey and feat it was to get it made.”
On “Dallas Buyers” not being previously seen as a front-runner for a best picture Oscar, and whether the SAG cast nomination changes that:
“Critics have been split .... Because it’s such a crowded landscape we thought we’d be recognized in certain categories — Matthew [McConaughey] and Jared [Leto] have been getting recognized a lot. But it’s a huge honor to be nominated [for Outstanding performance by a cast] by the largest branch of the Academy .... Anything can happen. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but the outpouring of emotion is overwhelming.” (Araya Diaz / Getty Images)

“This was the best wakeup call I’ve received all year! I am floored. To be honored by my fellow actors, people who understand, is really special. This project was precious to us for many reasons, the main one being the genius and humanity of Jane Campion. I’m also thrilled for the Sundance Channel, as they were true supporters and advocates of this series from the start.” (Kay Nietfeld / EPA)
