Gun tossed from car before suspect shot, sheriff’s department says

As Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives continued to investigate a shooting by one of the agency’s deputies, details of the incident emerged.

Deputies were on patrol in Norwalk shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday when they attempted to pull over a car on the 11300 block of Foster Road for a traffic violation, according to a statement released by the department.

The driver did not stop, and as he continued west on Foster, a passenger tossed a black semiautomatic handgun out a window, according to the statement.

The driver then quickly pulled over to the curb and “suddenly the suspect exited the passenger side of the vehicle, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the statement said.

The suspect, a 23-year-old whom authorities did not identify, was struck once in the upper torso and taken to a hospital. He is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The driver and a third person in the vehicle were detained for questioning, police said. A loaded handgun was recovered.
