Comfort me with apples? They're in apple-pie order. Apples and oranges? They're as American as apple pie — snow under thin crimson skin. For the record, the author will not be dissuaded from his belief that the most exquisitely named apple is indeed the Jonagold, that marvelous cross betwen the tough-skinned Jonathan and the insipid Golden Delicious.
