Report: Next-generation Google Nexus 7 tablet coming in July

The follow-up to Google’s Nexus 7 small-sized tablet will launch this summer, probably in July, a report Wednesday said.

Google will once again team up with Asus to make the second-generation Nexus 7, according to Reuters. The two companies teamed up last year on the original Nexus 7, which launched in the summer and sparked a battle between Google, Apple and Amazon in the small-sized tablet market.

The next version of the Nexus 7 will reportedly feature a higher screen resolution and a thinner frame, and it will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. The original Nexus 7 ran on Nvidia’s Tegra 3, but according to two unnamed sources in the report, Google decided on Qualcomm’s chip for power reasons.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Google?

It’s not clear how much the next Google tablet will cost, but the report says that Google may price the new Nexus 7 at $200 and sell the first generation Nexus 7 at a discount. However, the price of the new Nexus 7 could go as low as $149 to undercut Apple’s iPad Mini that starts at $329.

The Silicon Valley giant hopes to sell as many as 8 million units of the second-generation Nexus 7 in 2013, the report says.

Google could not be reached for comment.
