Conservatives Admit to Shortcomings

The Conservative Party opened its annual conference with harsh criticism of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s record on health, transportation and education--and even harsher criticism of itself.
While some Conservative leaders unveiled policies designed to revive the country’s creaky public services, others warned delegates that the Tories risk becoming an aging, isolated party that turns voters off.
Party Chairman Theresa May told the Conservatives that many people see them as “the nasty party” and “just plain unattractive.”
